Temporary exhibition on 3 floors / temporary exhibition Spheres (levels 3, 4 & 5)

>>> 10.09.2014 - 16.11.2014

For the third consecutive year, the Atomium is opening its doors to Belgian talent, as part of the Design September festival. This new edition has brought together three creative spirits, whose work is located at the crossroads between crafts, design and art.

Wood, ceramics and textiles have existed for thousands of years, and were originally used to make essentially practical objects. Garments were intended to act as protection against the cold, plates were made to contain food, and wood could be formed into anything, including roofs. But from the very outset, craftsmen have been inspired by their imaginative vision to move beyond this purely functional aspect and to create objects reflecting the role of aesthetic value. The three designers brought together here at Intersections#3 have taken the same direction.

Vera Vermeersch’s artistic carpets present three-dimensional translations of original works by other artists, or of her own creations. Through his unique and often ironic ceramic pieces, Hugo Meert raises fundamental questions, while Kaspar Hamacher’s unfussy wooden furniture and objects remind us of our links with nature.

Their work has nothing in common, apart from its notably powerful quality. However, the three creators share the same approach: by pushing back the boundaries of their medium, they compel traditional crafts to adapt themselves to their own emphatically 21st century talents.

Although technical expertise and artisanship still form the basis of their work, they have distanced themselves from traditions and conventions to make their entrance into the world of art and design.
